Building and Protecting Your Legacy

The Black Maricopa Chamber of Commerce (BMCC), led by co-founder Kent O’Jon, hosted an impactful event titled "Wealth Building & Wealth Protection Workshop." As usual the BMCC continues to provide invaluable resources to the community. This event was no exception, bringing together engaged attendees eager to learn how to better manage and extend their financial futures.

Planning for the Golden Years with Tino Gordon

The first speaker was Tino Gordon, a Wealth Planner from Gordon Legacy Consulting. Tino’s presentation focused on the long game: retirement planning and wealth accumulation.

One of the most impactful moments of his talk was a personal story about his father-in-law. Tino shared how his father-in-law, now retired, is actually earning more money than he ever did during his working years. The success of the plan is so significant that his father-in-law is in disbelief about the growth.

Tino’s advice to him? "Spend the money and enjoy life."

Tino offers free consultations and operates on a model where he does not charge the client a fee for his services. The crowd was deeply involved, asking questions about how to replicate that kind of retirement success.

Strategic Protection with Terrence Redmond

Next, Terrence Redmond, an Enrolled Agent (EA) from Cornerstone Tax LLC, took the stage to discuss the technical side of wealth protection.

His focus was sharp: tax strategies and business structures.

Terrence challenged the common "default" of many small business owners. While LLCs are proficient is specific situations, he advised the audience to look beyond standard LLCs, suggesting that S-Corps or C-Corps often provide superior protections and tax advantages for those looking to scale and protect their assets.

Structure Matters: The way your business is legally organized can have a massive impact on your tax liability.

Proactive Defense: Wealth protection isn't just about saving; it's about keeping what you earn through smart legal and tax positioning.

One of the most engaging moments of the day came when Terrence explained why he believes you shouldn’t pay off your house early, arguing that the money is better served through continued investing. This led to a, respectful back-and-forth with an attendee who advocated for the peace of mind that comes with a paid-off home (the "Dave Ramsey" way).

While the numbers often suggest you’ll earn more by postponing a house payoff, the room concluded that it ultimately comes down to the individual—finding the balance between mathematical growth and personal peace of mind.

Community, Connections, with Certificates

As the workshop drew to a close, Kent O’Jon took the floor to introduce several new BMCC members, gifting them with certificates of membership. It was a great moment of community growth. The BMCC has accumulated nearly two-hundred members.

Kent also announced the soon to be construction of the Maricopa Veteran Care Center, a multi-story office building complete with a Multipurpose venue, luxury apartments, offices, and numerous other amenities.

As the event came to a close, as usual, the people networked with each other which was equally vibrant. Taking photos and exchanging info and sharing ideas, fostering the kind of local connections the BMCC is known for.

Tino and Terrence provided food for the event while The Maricopa Pantry provided a variety of drinks. READ The Maricopa Pantry previous blog post here.

Events like these remind us that building wealth isn't just about the numbers—it's about the community you build it with.
